CJTR Programmer of the Month
Zooming with Larry Christie
Larry Christie hosts “Hits for Zoomers “Thursday afternoons from 2-4 p.m. playing hits from the 1940’s to the 1980’s. The show brings back memories both for Larry and his audience whom he refers to as Zoomers - “Baby Boomers who live life with a zing!”
Zoomers, or those born since 1945, are the largest single population group in Canada and their music is largely forgotten, says Larry. He has changed all that at CJTR since October 2009 when he began hosting Hits for Zoomers. Larry plays great hits using his own 20,000 piece digital computerized library!
“For me, sitting behind the mic - hosting the show is such a rush. I just love it!”
Larry is a great supporter of CJTR with its 100 volunteers and its eclectic mix of programs.
“Community radio is still in touch with its listeners!”
Larry says sitting behind the microphone, talking to his audience and rolling those golden hits, takes him back to many musical memories and his early radio roots in his home town of Thunder Bay. It was in that Ontario city that Larry began his career as a disc jockey in the early 1960’s.
In 1964 Larry ventured west to Saskatchewan, working at CKBI Radio and Television as a disc jockey, using the moniker ‘Carrie Listie’ for 10 years. During that period, Larry hosted an amazing 1,250 record hops for teens across northern Saskatchewan.
Later, Larry moved from radio into media relations, working for the Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL) and CRTC. For the past 15 years, he was the chief spokesperson for Sask Power. Listeners will remember his familiar voice answering reporters’ questions about power outages.
However, retirement at age 65 was not for Larry. So, after a lifetime of working in music with cars as his hobby, he is now selling vehicles while playing music at CJTR as a hobby!
“Hits for Zoomers allows me to connect with my generation as well as giving back to the community!”
“I should write a book,” says Larry.
