Can it really be the last Wednesday of the month already? It kind of sneaked up on me this month.
If you’ve listened to What Planet Is This?! with any kind of regularity, first of all; thank you. Secondly, you likely know that the last Wednesday of every month is Long-Play Wednesday, where I play nothing but vinyl records. It’s a great treat for me, where I get to delve into an assortment of new and old stuff in my collection that doesn’t get played very often.
Listening to records isn’t the same as other media, especially mp3s. We all know how easy it is to download and listen to a new track today. Well, the point of listening to records isn’t that it’s harder. The point is that it’s more involved. For many, listening to music isn’t an activity. It’s more like people put on music to hear something while they do something else. Of course, listening to a record can be almost as ignorable – just put it on and go do the dishes or mop the floor or whatever. You only have to go back and flip the record over once. I think, though, that there is a higher percentage of vinyl-listeners than digital-listeners who are more likely to just sit and enjoy the music.
If at all possible, I invite you to pour yourself a cup of tea/coffee/brandy/whatever, put on your headphones, sit back and enjoy some great music on vinyl record with me from 4:00 to 6:00 today.
