The Plain A.I.R. artist-in-residence this month is folk singer-songwriter Ellen Froese! Hailing from a dairy farm in the heart of Saskatchewan, young folk singer Ellen Froese is swiftly making her presence known in the Canadian music scene. Whether performing a folk traditional, a rock ‘n’ roll classic with her full band, or her own compositions, Froese handles it with an air of authenticity – all tempered with a healthy dose of humour and self-deprecation. The last couple years have brought main stage slots at festivals like Regina Folk Fest, and tours through Germany’s DevilDuck Records. With four albums behind her, Froese released full band record ‘Fightin’ Words’ in November 2019.

The Plain A.I.R. artist-in-residence this month is the Sâkêwêwak First Nations Artists’ Collective Inc.‘s Sâkêwêwak Annual Storytellers Festival, a community based, multidisciplinary arts showcase featuring Indigenous artists. The program will be hosted Dale Mac who will speak with a variety of guests from the festival. Tune in every Saturday in February from 3-4 pm to listen in!

Their month on air is an experiment with conversation and abstract ideas about what inspires them. From music and popular culture to random thoughts, it’s an audio journal of how they view the world and how they choose to entertain their brains on a day to day. The Plain A.I.R. artist-in-residence this month (November 2019) is Kyath Battie! For her month on air, Kyath presents a program called ‘Cinematic Scores’, a weekly show dedicated to cinematic soundtracks ranging from 80’s Blockbusters, Sci-Fi, Horror, Avant Garde, Video Games and Independent Singles. Kyath Battie is a filmmaker with specific interests in mysteries, landscapes and sound design. Her work has screened internationally and she has taught film production at several universities across Canada and the US. Tune in every Saturday in November from 3-4pm for ‘Cinematic Scores’!

Each week Mike will play music from a different decade of his life to reflect on how it has influenced him and to examine through lines across the years. Mike Rollo is Assistant Professor in the Department of Film at the University of Regina and an award-winning filmmaker. Tune in every Saturday in October from 3-4pm for The Soundtrack to My Life!

The artist-in-residence this month (July 2019) is Beth Curry, who examines and celebrates the Regina Folk Festival in time for their 50th anniversary, through lens of her personal experience with the festival. Tune in every Saturday in July from 3-4pm to hear their stories.

About Beth Curry:

Beth Curry has worked as a site manager at the Regina Folk Festival every year for more than a decade, having spent various parts of her time there as volunteer, audience member and performer. You may also recognize Beth’s voice from many moons ago on CJTR as DJ Bedhead on Tuesday morning and as part of the Thursday afternoon party show Your Other Lover with Jeannie Straub. Beth currently lives between Saskatchewan and Calgary, planning tours for musicians and getting her hands dirty in attempts to dismantle colonialism and patriarchy.

Saskatchewan African Heritage Museum

The Plain A.I.R. (June 2019) artist-in-residence is the Saskatchewan African Heritage Museum. The SAHM is a provincial organization whose primary purpose is to celebrate, explore, research, document and preserve the history, heritage and contributions of people of African ancestry. It is dedicated to helping people of African ancestry preserve and gain access to information about their history, appreciate their heritage and recognize the contributions that African descent individuals have made in Saskatchewan. Tune in every Saturday in June from 3-4pm to hear their stories.

The Plain A.I.R. (May 2019) artist-in-residence is Kris Alvarez and her show will be called “Little Brown on the Prairie”! Kris Alvarez is a theatre artist + Regina monologue. Kris creates with all ages for places like Globe Theatre School, FadaDance, and The Artesian and recently completed an artist residency with Common Weal Community Arts Respond to Racism program. Kris is passionate about Curtain Razors Theatre as a performer and Artistic Associate on the Board of Directors. After the success of What Kind of Brown Are You, her project inspired by ‘growing up brown’ in 1980s Regina, its current instalment, Burnt Sienna with Kris Alvarez, a variety show “with more colour”, was presented by Curtain Razors’ Moveable Feast 2018-19 series and will continue in 2019-20. Tune in every Saturday in May from 3-4pm to check out Little Brown on the Prairie.
